November 2017 Picture Book Box

  • Ernest by Catherine Rayner from Edinburgh, Scotland.  Ernest is a lovable large moose who just doesn’t quite fit into this book. But he’s determined and doesn’t easily give up, even though nothing seems to work. His little chipmunk friend has a few ideas to try and with a bit of arts and crafts ingenuity, they find a way. Every now and then I like to put a book from my “all time favourites” list into our boxes. Ernest was shortlisted in 2011 for the prestigious UK Kate Greenaway Medal for outstanding illustration in children's books. Catherine won the award in 2009 for Harris Finds His Feet. She is also the author and illustrator of Counting Stars (from our September 2016 Baby Box) and Augustus and His Smile (from our Modern Classics Box).
  • The Night Lion by Sanne Dufft.  Morgan loves to pretend he is a knight. His hat and his sword make him tall and strong. He is wild and fierce and frightening. But at night he has bad dreams that frighten him. His Nana gives him a stuffed lion that at night magically becomes real. Together they chase away the bad dreams and the lion helps Morgan to be braver than anyone. It was back in June that I saw advanced copies of this book. I fell in love with the wonderful story and gorgeous illustrations. It was a huge honour when the publisher asked me to write a quote about it, which they printed on the back of the book. The Night Lion was originally published in Germany as Magnus und der Nachlowe (Magnus and the Night Lion). North American rights were purchased by Canadian publisher Pajama Press and they published it in Canada this month. It will be available in the US in late February. Sanne lives in beautiful Tubingen, in the south of Germany. Don’t miss my interview with Sanne on our website blog.
  • An exclusive letter (which includes a delightful illustration) from The Night Lion author Sanne Duff
  • A Night Lion poster and book pin
  • A special rubber duck
