FEBRUARY 2019 PICTURE BOOK BOX.

  • The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach from Brooklyn, New York. New in paper, this charming book was a New York Times Bestseller and won the 2016 Ezra Jack Keats Honor (for outstanding new writer). A fun tale about how a sandwich disappeared. It all started with the bear who found a truck load of delicious berries which he quickly devoured. He fell asleep in the back of the truck and when he woke up he was in a strange new place. He explored this new place only to find a sandwich sitting unattended on a park bench. The story ends with a twist which will inspire some great discussion with your little one.
  • The Magic Boat by Kit Pearson & Katherine Farris (from Victoria, B.C.) is a lovely story about shyness, friendship and imagination. The beautiful illustrations are by Gabrielle Grimard from Waterville, Quebec. Ellie and her Nonna spend summer mornings at the beach. Nonna encourages shy Ellie to play with the other children and eventually she is invited by a girl named Piper to play on her magic boat. Although the old boat is half buried in the sand with peeling paint, Piper takes Ellie on imaginative adventures on the sea. When Piper has to return to the city, Ellie finds the magic of the boat has disappeared. But when a shy boy named Sasha arrives at the beach, Ellie gets up enough courage to ask him if he would like to see her magic boat. That’s all it takes for the magic boat to appear again. Kit is a best-selling children’s author who recently was named a member of the Order of Canada, one of our countries highest honours. Katherine was a researcher and non-fiction editor before becoming an artist. Gabrielle has been drawing since she was a young child but didn’t start illustrating children’s books until after the birth to her first child. She has won many awards and honours for her work.
  • An exclusive letter from Kit Pearson and Katherine Farris to Marmalade readers.
